Lactometer - Milk Hydrometer
A Milk Hydrometer also known as a lactometer is an instrument that is used to check for the purity of milk by measuring its density. Milk of given fat % content can have density within a certain fixed range.
A lactometer consists of a cylindrical graduated tube closed at both ends. when it is immersed in a fluid , it sinks upto a certain level and the reading on the outer surface then indicates the density.
Since water is less dense than milk , a lower reading of density is obtained with adulterated milk.
Milk Hydrometers or Lactometers in the UK comply with British Standard BS734.
