Concentrated or saturated Potassium Chloride (KCl) is the optimal electrolyte and filling solution for potentiometric titrations, direct pH measurement, redox or ion measurement where silver/silver chloride or calomel reference electrodes are used. However, saturated KCl is only sparingly soluble below 20°C, so if measurements below this temperature are to be carried out 4M Potassium Chloride remains in solution and confers an advantage over saturated potassium chloride.
