ATAGO Brix standards define the measurement ranges, calibration, and accuracy for sugar content (Brix) and sugar/acid ratios in fruits, beverages, and other food products.
Measurement Ranges
ATAGO refractometers, such as the PAL-1, PAL-2, PAL-3, and PAL-α, cover a wide range of Brix values to suit different applications:
- PAL-1: 0.0 to 50.0% Brix, ideal for fruit juices, soups, sauces, and low-sugar jams
- PAL-2: 45.0 to 93.0% Brix, suitable for high-concentration samples like honey, jelly, and concentrated juices
- PAL-3: Full range 0.0 to 93.0% Brix, combining features of PAL-1 and PAL-2 for versatile use .
- PAL-α: 0 to 85% Brix, designed for samples in cooking processes and general food measurement .
These ranges allow ATAGO devices to measure almost any liquid or semi-solid sample accurately.
Calibration and Standards
ATAGO Brix meters are calibrated using NIST-traceable standards, ensuring reliable and reproducible measurements. Calibration is typically performed with distilled water (0% Brix) and can be adjusted for temperature variations using automatic temperature compensation (ATC) . This ensures that readings remain accurate across different sample temperatures.
Sugar/Acid Ratio Measurement
The PAL-BX|ACID model measures both Brix (sugar content) and acidity simultaneously, providing the sugar/acid ratio, which is a key indicator of fruit ripeness and taste quality . This ratio is displayed digitally with a single button press, eliminating the need for manual calculations. The device uses refractometry for sugar measurement and electroconductivity for acidity, requiring no chemical reagents, unlike traditional titration methods .
Accuracy and Usage
- ATAGO devices are designed for precision and repeatability, suitable for laboratory, field, and industrial use .
- They comply with HACCP, GMP, and GLP standards, ensuring quality control in food production .
- The instruments are portable, lightweight, and easy to clean, making them practical for on-site measurements .
Practical Applications
ATAGO Brix standards are widely used in:
- Fruit quality assessment: Citrus, grapes, tomatoes, strawberries, blueberries .
- Beverage and food industry: Juices, sauces, jams, marmalades, and honey .
- Research and quality control: Ensuring consistent sweetness and proper sugar/acid balance in products .
By adhering to these standards, ATAGO refractometers provide reliable, reproducible, and rapid measurements of sugar content and sugar/acid ratios, supporting both commercial and laboratory applications.
